2.2 chord charts
The name of a chord is the letter name + the quality. Remember, if there is only the letter name, we assume the chord has a major quality. If there is an "m", then it is minor. The chord name is placed on top of the chord chart.
Examples: "A" chord = A major || "Bm" chord = B minor
The dots tell you what finger to use, what strings to play, and what frets to play. The number inside the dot tells you which finger to use. Your point finger (the finger closest to the thumb) is the first finger. An empty circle means no finger.
The string numbers: String 1 = High E string, string 2 = B string, string 3 = G string, string 4 = D string, string 5 = A string, string 6 = Low E
Assignment
Complete the Worksheet
Goal: To be able to read a chord chart by identifying the (i) name of a chord, (ii) quality of a chord, (iii) fret lines, (iv) string lines, and (v) dots.
How to Complete the Assignment:
Read and answer the questions by writing your answer above the lines for questions 1-4. Then, create a chord chart that matches the descriptions on the left. Remember that you are only making one chord chart, and questions 5-9 all are parts of the same chord chart. In essence you want to do the following for questions 5-9:
5) Write in the name of the chord, given that the chord is an "A7." (Look below if you need to review.)
6) Indicate that the 6th string is not played on the chord chart.
7) Indicate that 5th, 3rd, and 1st strings are played as open (no finger).
8) Indicate that the 1st finger is played on the 2nd fret, 4th string.
9) Indicate that the 2nd finger is played on the 2nd string, 2nd fret.
