5.3 Harmonizing a melody

  • Watch the walkthrough video.

Assignment

Goal: To demonstrate your understanding of the three harmonic movements by listening to them in use and by composing with them

How to Complete the Assignment:

  • Step 1: Listen to the melody

  • Step 2: Stop the backing track and write in the chords for G, F, and Am. Then continue listening at step 3

  • Step 3: Identify the notes in the melody as either a chord tone (R for root, 3 for 3rd, 5 for 5th) or a non-chord tone (N)

  • Step 4: Listen to the three types of harmonic movement (the shape of the harmony line) and choose one to use for making your own melody

  • Step 5: Choose how many harmony lines you want and whether you want the harmony line to be above or below the melody line

  • Step 6: Each time the melody plays a chord tone, write a chord tone below it for the harmony line. This will create the first part of your harmony line

  • Step 7: Fill in the rest of the harmony line with non-chord tones that follow the motion for your harmony line.

  • Exercise 3: Compose a harmony line using similar motion (located on pg. 2)

  • Exercise 4: Compose a harmony line using contrary motion

  • Exercise 5: Compose a harmony line using oblique motion

  • Exercise 6: Compose a harmony line using multiple harmonic movements
